I'm trying to find a source for a study about genealogical interest increasing while genealogical knowledge decreased (and the latter, IIRC, was defined by whether you knew the name of at least one great-grandparent). In the meantime, consider this one of those likely to be ETA'd posts where I collect notes on a topic:
