More non-book reviews: Sennheiser HD 558 headphones

Since my Grados were falling apart (the foam was deteriorating, the cans had long since developed a habit of sliding off the thing that goes over your head, etc., I ordered some new headphones. Here are things you should know about these: they are not cheap, they are overear and they are wireful. They are not noise canceling and they are "open back", so you can still hear stuff going on around you -- and other people can hear what you are listening to as well. If you aren't looking for something along these lines, they are not for you.

They are amazing. Neutral and precise, without being cold, boring or bright. Nicely responsive bass and in no way boomy. _Exactly_ what I expect from Sennheiser, which is what I was shopping for when I bought the Grados, but the store I was in didn't have them.

My ears are very happy. I bought them on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FEEY9A/ref=ox_ya_os_product

If I would change one thing, it would have been to give it a 1/8th inch plug, rather than the 1/4 with adapter, which makes that thing stick ridiculously far out.
